Correct characters are bold, incorrect characters are bold with a wavy underline, and untyped characters are lighter with no underline — so the three states are distinguishable without relying on colour. Touchscreen keyboards measure something different On a phone or tablet, an on-screen keyboard has no physical travel, usually applies autocorrect and word prediction, and delivers its input through a software path rather than a key matrix. Speed, accuracy and keystroke intervals collected on a virtual keyboard are not comparable with results from a physical keyboard. Pasting is blocked on this page so that a pasted block of text cannot be scored as typing.

The number printed on a key is the median gap in milliseconds between the previous keystroke and that key. It includes the time you spent moving your finger, so it is a measure of your typing, not of the key itself.

These conditions affect your result. A browser that rounds its clock to 1 ms cannot resolve sub-millisecond differences, so jitter will look artificially quantised. How we measure.
This browser reports time in steps of 1 ms or coarser, so your keystroke intervals are quantised to whole milliseconds. Words per minute and accuracy are unaffected; the consistency figure is coarser than it would be in a browser with a finer clock.
What this test cannot tell you
This is a measurement of your typing, observed through a web browser. It cannot measure your keyboard's hardware latency. The gaps it records between keystrokes are dominated by human motor timing — a hundred milliseconds or more — and any hardware or browser delay is buried inside that, far too small to separate out here.
It also cannot see switch actuation, keyboard firmware, matrix scanning, USB or Bluetooth transmission, operating-system scheduling, or your display. It cannot tell you whether a different keyboard would make you faster, and it cannot distinguish a slow key from a slow finger. A "slow key" in the table below simply means you took longer to reach and press it.

How this test scores your typing
Every typing test has to pick a definition, and most do not tell you which one they used. Here are the three this page uses, in full.
- Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. The five-character "standard word" is a long-standing convention that keeps long and short words from changing the score. Every character keystroke counts, including the ones you later corrected, and including spaces.
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes elapsed). An uncorrected error is an incorrect character still sitting in your text when the test ends. Net WPM is the headline number on this page, and it is floored at zero.
- Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes, judged at the moment each character was typed. Fixing a mistake afterwards does not retroactively make that keystroke correct, which is why accuracy can be below 100% even when the finished text is perfect.
Minutes elapsed excludes any time the test was paused because the window lost focus. The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads.
Keystroke consistency: the timing detail most typing tests skip
Two people can both type 60 WPM and type completely differently. One produces a metronomic stream of keystrokes roughly 200 ms apart. The other fires bursts of four or five very fast characters, then stalls for half a second on an awkward reach. The average is identical; the experience of typing is not.
This page records the gap between each pair of consecutive keystrokes using the browser's event timestamps, then reports the coefficient of variation — the standard deviation of those gaps divided by their mean, expressed as a percentage. A lower percentage means a more even rhythm. The number is always shown alongside its plain-language band (for example "Consistent (CV 22%)"), never the band on its own, because a label without a number hides how close it was to the boundary.
Consistency is a useful practice target precisely because it does not reward hammering. If your gaps get more even while your speed stays flat, that is real progress: fewer hesitations rather than faster fingers, and speed tends to follow.
Typing speed and keyboard latency are different things
People often arrive at a typing test hoping it will tell them whether their keyboard is slow. It cannot, and the reason is a matter of scale. At 60 WPM you are producing roughly five characters per second, so consecutive keystrokes are about 200 ms apart. Differences in input latency between keyboards are typically measured in single-digit milliseconds. A difference of that size is a rounding error inside a human interval two orders of magnitude larger, and no words-per-minute figure will ever resolve it.
What a browser can measure about input timing is the delay between the browser creating a key event and your JavaScript being able to read it — the browser-side input pipeline. That is a genuinely different measurement, and it lives on the keyboard latency test. Reading the per-key breakdown
The per-key table sorts your keys by the median gap leading into them. That gap covers everything between the previous keystroke and this one: recognising the next character, moving the finger, and pressing. Keys that consistently sit at the top of that list are usually awkward reaches rather than defective switches — the top number row, the outer little-finger keys, and anything that needs a shift.
Two columns matter as a pair. A key with a high median gap and no mistypes is one you approach carefully. A key with a high error rate and a low median gap is one you are rushing, and that is the more useful thing to work on.
Median is used rather than mean throughout, because a single long pause would drag a mean upward and tell you nothing. Keys pressed fewer than three times are held back unless there is little other data, since a median over two samples is not a median.
Getting a result worth comparing
A typing test is only meaningful against itself. Because scoring rules differ from site to site — some count only whole correct words, some ignore corrections, some pause the timer differently — a number from here and a number from elsewhere are not the same measurement.
- Use the same duration each time. Short tests flatter fast starters; 60 seconds is far harder to sustain than 15.
- Keep the punctuation and numbers setting fixed. Turning it on will cost most people a noticeable amount of speed, and that is normal.
- Run two or three attempts and look at the middle one, not your best one.
- Save results to history and compare like with like. History lives in this browser's local storage and is never uploaded.
- Watch the consistency figure as well as the WPM. It moves earlier and more honestly than speed does.
If the environment panel above reports a timer resolution of 1 ms or coarser, your words per minute and accuracy are still exact — they are counted, not timed at fine resolution — but the interval statistics are quantised, so treat small consistency differences between sessions with caution.

What is a good typing speed in words per minute?
There is no single authoritative benchmark, and any number you see quoted depends on the text, the test length and how errors are scored. Comfortable touch typists commonly land somewhere in the 40 to 70 net WPM range on plain English prose, and sustained speeds well above that are much less common. Because scoring rules differ between typing tests, comparing a number from this page with a number from another site is unreliable. Compare your own results across sessions using the same duration and the same settings.
What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?
Gross WPM is the total number of characters you typed divided by five, then divided by the number of minutes you typed for. The five-character word is the standard convention, so word length never changes the score. Net WPM subtracts your uncorrected errors: it is gross WPM minus the number of incorrect characters left in your text divided by the same number of minutes. The headline number on this page is net WPM, and gross WPM is shown next to it.
Does a faster keyboard make you type faster?
Not in any way this test can show. The gap between two of your keystrokes is typically in the range of roughly 100 to 250 milliseconds at ordinary typing speeds, while the differences in input latency between keyboards are usually a few milliseconds at most. Those few milliseconds sit inside a much larger human interval, so they do not move a words-per-minute score. If you want to look at input timing itself, use the keyboard latency test instead.
What does keystroke consistency mean here?
It is the coefficient of variation of your inter-keystroke intervals: the standard deviation of the gaps between consecutive keystrokes divided by their mean, shown as a percentage. A lower percentage means your keystrokes arrive at a more even pace. It is always reported next to the number that produced it, and it describes your typing rhythm as this browser observed it, not the behaviour of your keyboard.
Do backspaces and corrections count against my score?
Yes, in two ways. Accuracy is measured on every character at the moment you type it, so a character you typed wrongly and then fixed still counts as an inaccurate keystroke. Corrections also consume time, which lowers both gross and net WPM. What corrections do improve is the uncorrected error count, which is what net WPM subtracts, so fixing a mistake is usually still worth it.
Can I take this test on a phone or tablet?
You can, but the result measures something quite different. A touchscreen keyboard has no physical travel, usually applies autocorrect and prediction, and reports its events through a software path rather than a key matrix.
